Besides the initial look and of course the taste, there are some benefits of eating Duck eggs over Chicken eggs:
- Higher in Omega 3 and Vitamin D
- More Protein in the Whites
- Make incredibly fluffy cakes
At Meadowbank we choose to keep our Ducks in large airy straw filled barns with fresh water baths and outdoor runs to use during the day. Due to the amount of water that Ducks drink, they create a lot of mess!! This means that to keep them on grass they would quickly turn it to mud, we therefore prefer to keep our ducks on concrete yards so that we can keep their living environment as clean as possible. We actually find our girls would rather be inside when it's raining; not so much nice weather for ducks!
At Meadowbank we keep mainly two breeds of laying duck which are Cherry Valley and Khaki Campbell. We find that these birds suit our system and lay the tastiest eggs.
With one Quail egg being roughly 1/4 the size of an average Hen egg, they are initially quite a novelty to look at. Their size lends them well to canapes and as toppings for salads. They are also fantastic scrambled or poached on toast! Quail eggs are full of Iron and B12. Although due to their higher Yolk to White ratio they have a higher fat content than Hens eggs, the majority of the fats are 'good fats'.
Our Quail live in large airy barns with plenty of room to fly and display natural behaviors. Quail love to dust bath in the ample sawdust that we use to bed them on. Due to their small size, Quail are not suited to living outdoors or a Free Range systems.
Alongside our laying flock, we also run a breeding flock of Quail. Please contact us if you are interested in fertile Quail eggs.
At Meadowbank we produce a variety of coloured eggs, including beautiful Blue and Green eggs from our beautiful Blue Emerald hens.
Our hens have the freedom to roam across an acre of land next to the Tardebigge Canal where they can scratch, sunbathe and explore during the day, they then have a large spacious barn to spend the nights, safely away from Mr Fox! Their living space is designed for almost 100 more hens, by industry standard, this means that our girls are spoilt for space to spend their days!
The eggs from our beautiful, happy hens are available to buy from our self service shed outside the farm shed. We also supply our eggs to a variety of butchers, farm shops and garden centres.`
